Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said he is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy early next week. He emphasized that for this meeting to take place, an agreement must be reached between the two countries regarding the fundamental rights of the Hungarian minority. Magyar spoke at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. The Hungarian leader announced that negotiations are ongoing concerning the language, culture, and education rights of the Hungarian community living in Ukraine. Magyar noted that these contacts are currently progressing at a technical level and said the process looks promising. He mentioned that the negotiations could be completed at the technical stage within this week. The Hungarian Prime Minister argued that the ability of minorities to use their mother tongues in kindergarten, school, and public administration is a fundamental human right. He stated that cultural rights should be considered within the same framework. Magyar expressed that a country wishing to start the European Union membership process must respect these rights. He also recalled that there has been a dispute between Ukraine and Hungary on this issue for more than ten years. The Hungarian leader stated that if the problem is resolved, they are ready to open a new chapter in relations with Ukraine. He clearly indicated that the door is open for talks, but this depends on an agreement on minority rights. The report also mentioned that Magyar previously reminded that the opening of negotiation chapters for Ukraine is conditional on Kyiv fulfilling Hungary's 11 demands regarding minorities. It was noted that following Magyar's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels, she said the opening of chapters would be discussed at the European Council on June 18-19. It was recorded that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called on the European Union in June to open all chapters in the membership talks with Ukraine. Thus, the minority rights dispute between Hungary and Ukraine has also been brought to the center of the European Union enlargement process.
