In Erbil, northern Iraq, drone attacks occurred at dawn on Tuesday. International coalition warplanes intercepted drones targeting the US Consulate.
According to local media, explosions were heard over Erbil as international coalition aircraft stationed in the region to combat ISIS scrambled. The aircraft intercepted drones approaching the consulate in the Halifan area.
Another target of the attacks was camps of Iranian Kurdish parties. In the Bahreka area north of Erbil, a drone struck the Jiznikan Camp belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I). A vehicle hit by the drone fell onto a house inside the camp, but no casualties were reported.
In Halifan, the headquarters of the Kurdistan Toilers’ Party (Komala), which opposes the Iranian government, was hit by two drones. This attack also caused material damage.
It is not yet known who carried out the attacks, and no group has claimed responsibility.
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah have frequently witnessed drone and rocket attacks in recent months. On July 17, eight explosive-laden drones were shot down in Erbil, and nine people were killed in a rocket attack on the Komala camp in Sulaymaniyah. Last Friday, five drones were neutralized over Erbil.
Tensions have been high in the region since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February. The ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran on June 18, 2026 collapsed in early July due to a dispute over navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz, and mutual attacks resumed. Although clashes have paused since last Friday, mediators are trying to bring the parties back to the negotiating table.
