Federal charges have been filed against Jaden J. Read, 24, a Kansas resident, ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's planned visit to Wichita. The U.S. Department of Justice said the U.S. Attorney's Office for Kansas prepared a criminal complaint against Read on Saturday.
The criminal complaint is based on allegations that Read posted threatening messages online and does not constitute a final court judgment.
Facebook comments prompted investigation
The investigation began after authorities received a tip about Facebook comments posted beneath an article published on Oct. 15 about Trump's planned visit to Wichita on Oct. 19.
According to the allegations in the case file, Read called for Trump to be shot and wrote that he had obtained ammunition and intended to kill Trump. In one of his messages, he allegedly wrote: "Honestly, let's shoot Trump, where is our sniper? I'm tired of living this life for money."

Read allegedly wrote in another message that he had obtained ammunition and would kill Trump. These statements are being considered as part of the allegations in the criminal complaint.
Read turned over to federal custody
Authorities said Read was detained in Clearwater on Saturday and turned over to federal authorities. Read is expected to remain in custody until a hearing determines his detention status.
Federal prosecutor warns against political violence
U.S. Attorney for Kansas Ryan A. Kriegshauser said political violence and threats of political violence would not be tolerated. Kriegshauser said the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution allows for strong political dissent, but freedom of speech has constitutional limits.
