U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a directive to establish a new Special Tactics Squadron within the Air National Guard in Florida. The Pentagon said Wednesday that the unit would strengthen special operations capabilities and military readiness.
The squadron is planned to be based near Hurlburt Field and MacDill Air Force Base. The U.S. Special Operations Command and Air Force Special Operations Command are based at these facilities.
Coordination with active-duty forces to increase
The new structure is intended to deepen integration between the Air National Guard and active-duty special operations forces. The unit is expected to increase capabilities in combat operations, reconnaissance and personnel recovery.

Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said the Special Tactics community was being expanded under Hegseth’s leadership. Parnell said the new squadron would be positioned at the center of the special operations community at Hurlburt Field and MacDill Air Force Base.
The Florida squadron will draw on the experience of Air National Guard personnel. The unit is intended to strengthen capabilities in combat control, pararescue and special reconnaissance.
