The opening ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago sparked controversy due to a land acknowledgment made at the start of the program. Valerie Jarrett hosted the event marking the beginning of the opening week.
Jarrett, who served as a senior advisor during Obama's presidency and is now the CEO of the Obama Foundation, began her speech by honoring the original inhabitants of the region. She acknowledged the Anishinaabe, Council of Three Fires, Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi communities, paying respect to the land.
This statement quickly ignited debate following the event. It was noted that land acknowledgments are practices used to honor Indigenous peoples who historically lived on these lands, but some view them as symbolic political rituals.
Critics highlighted that despite emphasizing "stolen land," the area has not been returned. Some conservative commentators questioned the practical implications of such acknowledgments.
High-profile Democratic figures also attended the event. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were among the attendees.
The center also featured performances by John Legend, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, and David Letterman were among the guests.
The cost of the Obama Presidential Center reached approximately $1 billion. The initial budget was lower when the project was first announced, but costs gradually increased during construction.
The official opening of the center is scheduled for Friday. The Jackson Park project has frequently been in the spotlight due to years of permit processes, environmental reviews, and lawsuits.
The construction aimed to award high-profile contracts to minority-owned subcontractors. However, reports indicated that some subcontractors have not been paid, and one company claimed it was owed $4 million.
The project was announced in 2015, with Jackson Park in Chicago's South Side selected as the site in 2016. The groundbreaking was delayed until 2021 due to bureaucratic obstacles.
The planned opening schedule was also changed. While the center was expected to open in March 2025, the ceremony was postponed by a year to this week.
