A regulation aimed at preventing children under 16 in Malaysia from opening social media accounts has come into effect. The new implementation requires platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to establish age verification systems. It was stated that the regulation aims to protect young people from harmful content on social media. The application, which is said to affect approximately 8 million social media users, may impose fines of up to 2.5 million dollars on companies that do not comply. Authorities also announced that a transition period will be given for platforms to implement age verification systems.
