Buenos Aires will host the match in which Lionel Messi will wear the Argentina national team jersey for the final time. Messi will bring his international career to an end on October 6 in a friendly against Benin at River Plate’s Monumental Stadium.
Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, said in a video statement that a farewell ceremony befitting the 39-year-old captain would be held in his country. Tapia described the event as “Lionel Andres Messi’s last tango.”
Players from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families have also been invited to the program being organized for Messi, who will appear before his supporters for the final time after more than 20 years with the national team.
Messi’s international career comes to an end
Messi announced on August 31 that he had retired from international football. The star, who has made more than 200 appearances for Argentina, is his country’s top scorer and most-capped player with 125 goals.
Messi played a role in Argentina’s 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles and its 2022 World Cup triumph. His final official goal for the national team was reportedly against Egypt in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Argentina finished the tournament as runners-up after losing 1-0 to Spain in the final.
Two friendlies before the Benin match
Argentina’s three-match friendly schedule will begin with a game against Bolivia at Mario Kempes Stadium in Cordoba on September 30.
The team will face Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on October 3. Messi’s farewell to the national team will take place against Benin three days later, after that match.
No capacity limit at the Monumental
The program was planned during the period when disciplinary sanctions imposed on Argentina following incidents during the 2026 World Cup were being enforced. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that Argentina must play its next two home matches at 50 percent stadium capacity, while deferring the second restriction subject to a probationary period.
The sanctions covered post-match conduct as well as a banner displayed by players defending Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, which are under British administration, after Argentina’s semifinal victory over England. The active capacity restriction is expected to expire before the Benin match. As a result, no stadium capacity limit will apply during Messi’s farewell match.
After completing his international career, Messi will continue playing club football for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.
