A rapidly growing wildfire in Nevada has prompted a mandatory evacuation order for 42,000 people. The flames have spread across a large area of Washoe County, while the fire remains uncontrolled.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and ordered the deployment of state National Guard units.
Fire spreads across 60 square kilometers
The fire, which began on August 22 northwest of Reno, has affected an area of approximately 60 square kilometers. Around 45,000 people living near the fire were warned to prepare for a possible evacuation.
Strong winds challenge crews
Officials said human activity caused the fire. Strong winds have made it difficult for firefighters to battle the flames and reach the affected areas.
Six people were injured in the fire. Three of the injured were emergency responders, while homes sustained significant damage.
