US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group had reached its area of responsibility as part of a planned deployment. The command said the group had arrived in the region one day earlier.
The USS George Washington aircraft carrier arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. CENTCOM also shared a photograph showing fighter aircraft on the carrier’s deck as it passed through the Arabian Sea.
Claims about conditions aboard the Lincoln
After the USS Abraham Lincoln’s prolonged deployment linked to the war involving Iran, allegations emerged of serious mental health problems and structural issues aboard the ship.
Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal sought answers from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao about the sustainability of the current deployment model.
Blumenthal raised concerns about supply shortages, possible water contamination, plumbing failures, deteriorating mental health, security concerns and serious disruptions to mail deliveries that left care packages waiting in transit.
US officials, however, rejected claims that living conditions aboard the aircraft carrier were poor.
George Washington’s mission in the region
Based in Yokosuka, Japan, the George Washington was assigned to support the region as the US Navy’s only aircraft carrier permanently stationed overseas.
