New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the importance of the 2026 World Cup being safe and trouble-free for the city by referencing Mario Balotelli in his speech.
In his assessment of New York’s role as a host city, Mamdani said they would maintain constant communication before the matches and want the organization to proceed in an orderly manner.
Balotelli Reference
Mamdani recalled former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli’s words about his goal celebrations. He mentioned that Balotelli said he didn’t celebrate goals because it was just his job.
The New York mayor expressed that similarly, if the World Cup in New York becomes a safe, orderly, and smoothly running event, it would not be something to celebrate but a responsibility to fulfill.
Tournament Preparations Continue
As the 2026 World Cup approaches this week, Mamdani intensified his messages to show that New York is ready for the tournament. He aimed to highlight the city’s identity as a host.
It was noted that MetLife Stadium will host eight matches during the tournament, including the group match between England and Panama and the final. Although the stadium is technically located in New Jersey, it stands out as one of the most important football centers around New York.
Mamdani’s Interest in Football
Mamdani is known to closely follow football, is an Arsenal supporter, and holds shares in Real Oviedo. The mayor has previously attracted attention with his football-related remarks.
Shortly after taking office in January, he organized a viewing event for the Africa Cup of Nations final, reflecting his passion for football. His recent speech continued this trend.
Mamdani conveyed that security and smooth operation will be priorities during the World Cup hosted by New York, emphasizing that the city must present a strong showcase throughout the event.
