The New York Police Department (NYPD) finally removed a tenant who damaged an apartment in East Harlem after an eviction process lasting nearly two years. Tenant Falade Aderidigbe moved into a newly built apartment in March 2024 and paid the monthly rent of $2,350 with a voucher provided by the Human Resources Administration. However, the tenant caused approximately $30,000 worth of damage to the apartment; tearing down walls, removing drywall, and destroying the bathroom. Landlord Amy Simek and her son Kevin had to incur about $40,000 in legal expenses for the tenant's eviction. The eviction process began in August 2024, and the tenant's lease ended in February 2025. Amy Simek stated that the tenant made their lives difficult for two years and the court could not remove him from the home. She also emphasized that landlords are not social workers and that sufficient support is not provided in such cases. She expressed that the tenant also posed a threat to the surrounding neighbors. Some tenants terminated their leases early because they did not feel safe. Kevin stated that the city administration places people with mental health issues in private homes and avoids responsibility in this matter.
