Ohio State made two significant changes in the coaching staff for swimming and diving. Emily Hetzer became the program's new assistant coach, while Michael Butler was promoted to a full-time hybrid role.
Butler will now serve both as an assistant coach and as the operations director. The university described this position as a newly created dual role.
Highlights
- Emily Hetzer joined the Ohio State swimming and diving team as an assistant coach.
- Michael Butler took on the roles of assistant coach and operations director.
- The operations director position was previously held by Jessica Dejanovic.
- Dejanovic moved to MK Roofing and Construction as an executive coordinator in March.
- Hetzer served two seasons as an assistant coach in Cincinnati, coaching four NCAA qualifiers and two U.S. Olympic Trials semifinalists.
Hetzer’s Career Background
Emily Hetzer came to Columbus after two seasons as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati. During her time in Cincinnati, she coached four NCAA qualifiers, two U.S. Olympic Trials semifinalists, and contributed to 17 school records.
Before Cincinnati, Hetzer worked as a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2023-24 season. As an athlete, she stood out by qualifying for NCAA standards for five seasons at Auburn and placing fourth twice in the women's 1650 freestyle at the SEC Championships.
Hetzer also holds two separate bachelor's degrees: kinesiology and exercise science in 2022, and psychology in 2023.
Rising Role in Coaching
Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott said Hetzer came to the program with a strong recommendation from Cincinnati. Dorenkott emphasized Hetzer’s high work capacity and natural ability to connect with young athletes.
He also mentioned that the coaching staff shares a consensus that Hetzer fits well with the team culture and future vision. He stated that she is a suitable addition to the program.
Butler’s New Dual Role
Michael Butler will remain as an assistant coach poolside and also work as the operations director under Ohio State’s newly created dual role. The university noted that Butler held a temporary coaching role last season.
Butler’s sports background also comes from within the university. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Case Western University in the 2024-25 season. Prior to that, he swam at Case Western from 2021-24 and was the former school record holder in the 1650 freestyle.
Butler earned his bachelor's degrees in psychology and cognitive science from Case Western in 2025. Dorenkott said Butler’s work discipline and dedication to swimming have been well received within the team.
Former operations director Jessica Dejanovic left her position in March to take a new job as an executive coordinator at MK Roofing and Construction. Dejanovic had served as operations director at Ohio State since October 2021.
Context: While updating its technical staff, Ohio State added an experienced assistant coach to the roster and introduced a new role distribution within the internal structure. This way, the program aims to strengthen both athletic development and operational flow within the same staff.
