During his first visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV called on world leaders to avoid rhetoric that divides society and fuels polarization through simplistic solutions. He warned that stirring division for popular support is becoming an increasing danger.
Speaking in Madrid at the beginning of a week-long visit, the Pope emphasized the importance of listening to calls for peace amid ongoing violations of human dignity. He noted that reducing social and historical realities to oversimplified terms harms societies.
Highlighting the Role of Technology
Pope Leo XIV pointed out that technology also plays a role in this process, as it can foster an environment that amplifies prejudices and weakens critical thinking. He stressed the need for a more sensible and constructive public discourse.
Referencing Spain’s History
The Pope cited Spain’s history as an example of different religions and cultures coexisting. He recalled how Christians, Muslims, and Jews contributed to knowledge production during the Middle Ages, particularly through the translation school in Toledo where Arabic texts were rendered into Latin, Spanish, and Hebrew, advancing human knowledge.
Leo XIV stated that a culture of encounter, rather than conflict, strengthens stability and prosperity. He concluded his message by emphasizing that societies should listen to each other instead of excluding one another.
Visit Continues with a Busy Schedule
Thousands gathered along the route to welcome the Pope as he passed through the royal palace. This visit marks Pope Leo XIV’s first trip to Spain since 2011.
It is also notable as his first visit to a European Union country outside Italy. During the visit, he is expected to deliver more than 20 speeches, become the first pope to address the Spanish parliament, and inaugurate a new tower at the famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
