Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has moved to pursue civil negligence charges against Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Paul's move came after Fauci, during congressional testimony, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 70 times and refused to answer questions about the origins of COVID-19.
Paul, the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had previously subpoenaed Fauci to compel his testimony on the pandemic's origins. During Wednesday's hearing, Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right in response to questions.
Senator Paul said, "We will hold a vote on a civil negligence charge next week. I think there is another legal question courts must decide: Does a presidential pardon give you complete immunity?"
In his opening statement, Fauci alleged that Rand Paul has an "obsession" with having him arrested and had published over 1,000 pages of his personal journals over the weekend in an effort to embarrass and intimidate him. While some Democratic members of the committee defended Fauci, the upcoming vote is expected to fall along party lines.
