U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. During the meeting, Rubio expressed U.S. support for the Iraqi government and people’s efforts to strengthen and preserve internal stability.
Rubio also supported Iraqis’ efforts to develop their economy, expand relations with the international community and strengthen state institutions. The U.S. secretary of state also backed government efforts to consolidate the foundations of stability and economic development.
Al-Zaidi said his government was working to consolidate Iraq-U.S. relations and elevate the strategic partnership. The Iraqi prime minister said constructive economic cooperation would expand areas of joint work and strengthen mutual interests.
Weapons to be brought under state control
The Iraqi prime minister reiterated his government’s determination to complete its “sovereignty obligations” and continue efforts to bring weapons under state control in line with constitutional and legal principles.
Iraqi army spokesman Sabah al-Numan announced on June 3 that a committee had been formed to ensure that weapons remained exclusively under state control and that the committee had begun its work.
The general debate at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is being held at the U.N. Headquarters in New York from Sept. 22 to 28 under the theme “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global ambition: Delivering for people and the planet.”
