U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega’s statement that there would be no more elections in the country. Rubio said the remarks made clear the regime’s authoritarian nature.
The U.S. official said that Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, had abandoned even the slightest pretense of popular consent, and stressed that the people of Nicaragua have the right to choose their leaders through democratic elections.
Rubio called on the international community to act together. He stated that the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship cannot expect to maintain normal relations with other nations while trampling on the fundamental principles of the democratic continent.
The Secretary of State’s remarks came after Ortega announced they would enact “wall-building” laws against the opposition and that elections would come to an end.
