Georgia high school finalist Sam Fields has announced his commitment to continue his swimming and education at the U.S. Air Force Academy starting in fall 2027.
Fields shared the news on Instagram, thanking his family, coaches, and the Swim Atlanta Midway team. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity offered by the academy and wrote that he is ready to wear the Falcons jersey.
Rising Star at Walton High School
Fields, a senior at Walton High School in Georgia, has been a member of the school's varsity swim team for three years. He competes year-round with SwimAtlanta, specializing in backstroke, freestyle, and individual medley events.
Fields showed remarkable improvement in his last short course season, dropping about eight seconds in the 200 individual medley, three seconds in the 200 backstroke, two seconds in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, and one second each in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Personal Bests Throughout the Season
Fields achieved his best times at various meets during the season. At the Georgia Senior State Championships in December, he swam 49.77 in the 100 backstroke and 1:47.95 in the 200 backstroke.
In February at the GHSA 6A State Championships, he reached 21.16 in the 50 freestyle. At the GA SA Best of the South meet in early March, he recorded 1:50.90 in the 200 individual medley. At the Greater Atlanta Divisionals at the end of March, he posted 46.65 in the 100 freestyle and 1:41.83 in the 200 freestyle.
Fields has been an A finalist every year of his high school career and achieved his best results this season at the GHSA 6A State Championships, finishing fifth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 200 individual medley. He also helped his team place fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay.
Expected Role at the Academy
Competing at the Division I level, Air Force participates in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The men's team won the team championship this season, finishing 50 points ahead of UNLV.
Fields’ current times indicate he has the potential to contribute significantly even before his first season at the conference level. His times are close to qualifying for the B final in the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke, and for the C final in the 100 and 200 freestyle. He also needs to improve slightly to reach the C final cutoff in the 50 freestyle.
Fields will join Drew Hopkins and Charlie Wang, who are part of Air Force’s class of 2031.
