Kim Min-seok won the leadership election at the Democratic Party’s convention in the city of Daejeon. Kim, the new leader of South Korea’s ruling party, received 54.08 percent of the vote.
Incumbent leader Jung Chung-rae, who ran for the party leadership for the second consecutive time, received 45.92 percent. Former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil was eliminated after the first round and finished third in the election.
Kim promises comprehensive change
Speaking after the results were announced, Kim said he would work to ensure the success of President Lee Jae Myung and his administration.
Kim also pledged to make comprehensive changes to the Democratic Party’s language, policies, attitude and culture.
From the premiership to the leadership race
Described as a political ally of Lee Jae Myung, Kim stepped down as prime minister early this year to run for the party leadership. Kim had been appointed prime minister in July last year.
Kim’s election as party leader is expected to strengthen President Lee Jae Myung’s influence over the ruling Democratic Party.
