An armed attack occurred in Montreal, Canada, in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. Three people died in the incident, including a police officer, a civilian, and the attacker, while another police officer was injured.
Witness describes the scene
A witness named Heidi Doctor, who was in the area at the time, recounted that after dropping her two children off at a barbershop, she was near her car handling a work call when she noticed sudden movement by security forces. Doctor said, "I saw a police officer standing in front of me look around and then aim his gun at the car in front of me."
Then, seeing in her mirror numerous security personnel running toward the Hilton Hotel, Doctor called her father to understand the situation. She stated that a large number of police soon flooded the area.
Children trapped in barbershop
About 20 minutes later, police asked Doctor to leave her car and evacuate the area. However, Doctor refused, explaining that her children, aged 16 and 14, were in a nearby barbershop and no one knew they were there.
Doctor said, "My children were there, and I didn't want to leave them. I couldn't even get out of my car after the police arrived. I've been waiting for two and a half hours; they are hiding in the back and are probably hungry now." She added that her children heard the gunshots from the barbershop.
Security measures in the area
Montreal police declared a state of emergency in the area, asking residents to stay home, close their doors and windows, and stay away from the scene. Parts of the Decarie Expressway and surrounding roads were closed to traffic due to the ongoing security operation.
Police announced that one of the suspects had been "neutralized." Security measures and investigations continue to determine the details and motive of the incident.
The neighborhood where the armed attack occurred is home to many Jewish residents, institutions, as well as kosher restaurants and shops. Although unverified reports circulated that Jewish institutions may have been targeted or that there may have been multiple attackers, authorities have not confirmed this information.
