Expanding the partnership between the United States and Algeria in the areas of economic cooperation and security was discussed during Trump administration senior adviser Massad Boulos’s visit to Algeria.
Boulos said Algeria is an important partner for the United States in strengthening regional security, expanding economic opportunities and increasing the prosperity of both countries.
Boulos, who was on an official visit to Algeria, was received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Describing the meeting as “extremely productive,” Boulos said it was a continuation of recent contacts on shared regional priorities and bilateral relations.
Economic and energy cooperation
Boulos said he would discuss bilateral relations with Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. He also said he would discuss options for strengthening cooperation in the energy sector with Noureddine Daoudi, chief executive of state energy company Sonatrach.
The Algerian Prime Minister’s Office announced that the meeting between Boulos and Ghrieb included an expression of satisfaction with the positive momentum in the partnership between the two countries in various areas, particularly the economy.
The talks addressed deepening bilateral cooperation and expanding it into new sectors, increasing the presence of American companies in Algeria, expanding investments and raising trade volume.
Condolences over the fires
Boulos extended his condolences to the government and people of Algeria over fires that broke out in various parts of the country. The fires affected several provinces in eastern Algeria between August 27 and 30, causing loss of life and material damage.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by these difficult circumstances,” Boulos said.
Algeria’s other partnerships
The energy sector remains one of the main areas of economic relations between the United States and Algeria. While Algeria seeks to expand its cooperation with the United States into other sectors, it is also maintaining its strategic relations with Russia and China.
President Tebboune has said they do not want the development of relations with Washington to come at the expense of relations with Moscow or other countries.
