U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will allocate $700 million to coal-fired power plants. Trump said he made this decision under the Defense Production Act, which accelerates production for national needs during wartime.
Trump argued that this move was taken to reduce energy prices and the cost of living. Describing coal as "clean and beautiful," Trump provided new support to the sector despite coal being one of the dirtiest fossil fuels.
14 Plants and 42 Coal Mines to Be Protected
Trump stated that the announced $700 million investment will protect 14 coal power plants and 42 coal mines. He also mentioned plans to build two new coal power plants and a large export terminal.
The support includes grants to existing coal facilities across the country. It was noted that some of these facilities have the capacity to export coal.
Bringing Coal Policy Back to the Forefront
The decision once again brought attention to Trump’s efforts to revive the coal industry. The announcement reignited debates over fossil fuel policies amid ongoing discussions about clean energy.
At a press conference, Trump described this step as "historic." He reiterated his message that coal should have a stronger role in the energy supply.
