US President Donald Trump said at an election rally in Tennessee that Iran could take new action ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3. Trump argued that Iran believed these steps would harm the United States.
Trump said Washington could end the conflict with Iran very quickly and claimed that he had acted with restraint toward Iran. He also claimed that Iran’s navy had been destroyed, saying that 159 Iranian vessels had been sunk since late February.
Trump also raised the possibility of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, one of the key issues driving tensions in the region. “We are thinking about changing its name to the Trump Strait,” he said.

War with Iran on the midterm election agenda
Trump had previously said that the war with Iran could end immediately after the November 3 midterm elections. Trump is not a candidate in the midterms, but he is campaigning to support Republican candidates and help his party retain control of one or both chambers of Congress.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. The Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed after Iran responded with missile and drone attacks in the region.
The war, which lasted more than seven months, drove up global energy prices as commercial oil shipments through the strategic waterway effectively came to a halt.

Implementation of June agreement halted
The United States and Iran signed a framework agreement in June after mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar, seeking to halt the fighting and pave the way for negotiations.
However, implementation of the agreement later stalled because of disagreements between the parties, including over security and navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz.
