Donald Trump withdrew his support from Jackson Lahmeyer, whom he had previously backed, in the Republican congressional race in Oklahoma and threw his support behind Mark Tedford. Lahmeyer announced that he had suspended his campaign before Trump's decision.
This move by Trump marked a notable shift in the race for Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District. Trump had previously described Lahmeyer as a "MAGA warrior" and a longtime ally.
Trump Announces Support Change on Truth Social
Trump posted around 2:23 PM local time, stating his support for Mark Tedford. He described Tedford as "Trump-friendly and a MAGA supporter to the end," pledging his "full and unconditional support" to him.
In the same statement, Trump acknowledged Lahmeyer's efforts under difficult conditions and thanked him. However, he clearly stated that he would now support Tedford in the race for Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District.
Lahmeyer Suspends Campaign
Around 2:32 PM, Lahmeyer announced via X that he was suspending his congressional campaign. He said the decision came after discussions with his wife Kendra and his team over the past twenty-four hours.
Lahmeyer expressed that he did not want to involve his family, church, and voters of Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District in a distracting process. He justified his withdrawal by saying, "Washington needs a strong conservative voice to represent them."
Decision Follows Turbulent Campaign Period
Lahmeyer's campaign had faced challenges recently following reports in the media. These reports included controversies regarding his communications with former Miss Oklahoma USA Caitlin Simmons Key.
Lahmeyer later admitted via messaging that he "crossed a line" but argued that the portrayal of him was misleading. Neither Trump nor the White House provided additional public explanation for the change in support.
Tedford Emerges as Front-Runner
According to AP results, Mark Tedford received 32.2% of the vote in the first round, while Jackson Lahmeyer received 25.9%. These results advanced both candidates to the Republican primary to fill the seat vacated by Kevin Hern.
With Trump's shift of support to Tedford, the candidate's position strengthened in this strongly Republican-leaning district. Lahmeyer's withdrawal quickly altered the political dynamics of the race.
A White House official directed inquiries to Trump's Truth Social post rather than providing comments. No further statements were made by Tedford, Lahmeyer, or the White House on the matter.
