U.S. President Donald Trump opposed Ukraine targeting diesel fuel production facilities in Russia and asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt the attacks.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said Zelenskyy should not target diesel fuel production in Russia. Trump said Ukraine could target other sites and argued that attacks on refineries were negatively affecting diesel supplies worldwide.
Trump also said that the current disruptions in diesel markets were not caused by tensions in the Middle East but by the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump said Washington had raised the issue directly with the Ukrainian leader and that U.S. officials did not want Kyiv to target the refineries. Trump argued that destroying Russia’s diesel production capacity was harming the world. Ukrainian officials did not immediately respond to his remarks.
