The latest US measures against Cuba have drawn criticism from United Nations human rights experts. The experts called on Washington to lift the sanctions, saying the measures have further deepened Cuba’s humanitarian crisis.
The expanded restrictions targeting Cuba’s energy sector, announced on July 23, have made fuel imports more difficult. They came as the country was facing severe fuel shortages and shortly after Cuba experienced its third major nationwide blackout.
Power outages disrupt healthcare services
The experts said the humanitarian consequences in Cuba had developed into a comprehensive crisis threatening the rights to health, life, food and development. In some parts of Havana, uncollected garbage has piled up, increasing the risk of disease.
Repeated power outages have disrupted healthcare services. United Nations agencies have warned about food insecurity in Cuba, growing shortages of medicines and other basic goods, and declining capacity for cancer treatment.
Urgent appeal to international organizations
The experts called on the international community and civil society organizations to act quickly to prevent a “silent Gaza” from emerging in Cuba.
The experts argued that US sanctions violate international law and alleged that the measures are part of a broader strategy aimed at changing Cuba’s political system.
The experts also called on the US government to end threats and hostile actions against Cuba’s sovereignty. They urged the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly to address the issue urgently.
