The U.S. Coast Guard announced that two ships were stopped in the Caribbean and relayed allegations that they were carrying fuel to Cuba and attempting to circumvent the fuel blockade imposed on the country.
The 91-meter container ship Grace was stopped by U.S. forces on Sept. 5 in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Mexico. The ship’s transponders, which transmitted its location, had been turned off, raising suspicions that it was attempting to evade detection.

Earlier in the summer, a smaller ship named Jaira Provider was also stopped. The U.S. Coast Guard said intelligence indicated that the ship was carrying fuel to Cuba.

Jaira Provider was carrying approximately 800 tons of fuel, while the amount aboard Grace was not disclosed. Both ships had last called at the Port of Colón in Panama.
The United States has imposed a blockade on oil and fuel shipments to Cuba since January.
