The US Embassy in Tel Aviv issued a security warning for American citizens due to rising tensions in the Middle East. In its statement on Friday, the embassy stressed that the security situation in the region is complex and could escalate unexpectedly.
The warning urged Americans in the region to remain cautious and vigilant, and to be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and travel disruptions. Americans outside the Middle East were advised to reconsider traveling to or transiting through the region.
The embassy recommended that travelers closely monitor information on airport and airline operations. The statement noted that Iran and its allied groups could target US diplomatic facilities and other American interests worldwide, including in the Middle East.
Tensions Have Escalated in Recent Weeks
Tensions between the US and Iran have risen markedly in recent weeks. For about two weeks, the US has carried out successive airstrikes on targets inside Iran, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks on US-linked military bases and facilities in the region.
US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that the ceasefire, which took effect with the memorandum of understanding signed on June 18, had ended. Trump's statement came after Iran targeted three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran insists on establishing a mechanism to regulate ship transits through the strategic waterway, while Washington demands guaranteed freedom of navigation and security in the strait.
