The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced.
Rubio confirmed the invitation while speaking to reporters in New York following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The US secretary of state said resolving international disputes requires engagement with governments and leaders with whom Washington has significant disagreements.
Rubio said Putin’s participation in the G20 would provide an opportunity for the Russian president to engage not only with US President Donald Trump but also with other world leaders.
Washington hopes Putin will accept the invitation, Rubio added.

Possible Trump-Putin Talks at G20
Rubio said there was currently no confirmed plan for a separate meeting between Trump and Putin during the summit.
However, he said Washington remained open to engagement and noted that Putin’s attendance could provide an opportunity for direct discussions between the two leaders.
Rubio stressed that any high-level meeting should ideally produce concrete results and would therefore require substantial preparatory work.
The announcement followed Rubio’s meeting with Lavrov in New York, where the war between Russia and Ukraine and broader US-Russia relations were among the issues discussed.
Russia remains a member of the G20, although Putin has not attended the group’s leaders’ summit in person in recent years. The Kremlin has yet to publicly confirm whether Putin will accept the US invitation.
