Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York on Wednesday, September 23, during Sánchez’s visit to the United States for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting took place at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the New York City mayor, as part of an event titled “Building an Economy for the Majority.”
Sánchez and Mamdani discussed economic policies aimed at increasing employment and wages while reducing inequality and strengthening social protections.
Following the meeting, Sánchez said Spain was demonstrating that a different economic model was possible, pointing to job creation, higher wages and efforts to reduce inequality.

“Social justice is not the enemy of economic growth,” Sánchez said in a social media post following his meeting with Mamdani.
During the event, the Spanish prime minister also highlighted his government’s economic and migration policies and argued that economic growth could be combined with stronger social protections and measures aimed at reducing inequality.

Economic Policies Take Center Stage
Mamdani highlighted several policies implemented by the Spanish government, including measures related to wages, housing and workers’ rights, while discussing approaches aimed at making New York more affordable for working residents.
The meeting was part of Sánchez’s broader agenda in New York during the UN General Assembly, which includes meetings and events focused on international affairs and the global economy.
Other international political figures also participated in the event at Gracie Mansion, including European Council President António Costa and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
