Construction of the $400 million ballroom commissioned by the Trump administration at the White House has been temporarily allowed to continue. The U.S. Supreme Court made it possible for the project to proceed until a new ruling is issued.
Chief Justice John Roberts announced a one-page order suspending the lower court’s April 16 decision halting construction.
Merits ruling still pending
The order announced by Roberts did not resolve the merits of the ballroom case. The Supreme Court will issue its ruling on the underlying legal issue at a later date.
The step allowing construction to continue for now was described as a “victory” for Trump.
Trump administration took rulings to higher court
A local court ordered construction of the ballroom to be halted on April 16, and the Trump administration appealed the decision, taking the case to the higher court.
On August 7, a federal appeals court in the United States ruled that the Trump administration could not build a ballroom at the White House without congressional approval. The administration also appealed that ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.
