A boat from the Carteret Fire Department in New Jersey was involved in an unusual accident in New York Harbor on Friday, July 4. The boat sank after a whale surfaced and struck it, causing damage, but the entire crew was rescued safely.
According to fire department officials, the boat, named Marine Unit 2, was returning to Carteret after completing a maritime security mission in the New York/New Jersey port area when, around 4:30 p.m., a whale suddenly surfaced near the mouth of Raritan Bay and struck the stern of the boat.
The force of the collision caused serious damage to the boat, and it began taking on water rapidly. The firefighters had to abandon the vessel within seconds. A nearby jet ski operator and another boat immediately came to help and pulled the crew from the water. A marine unit from the Perth Amboy Fire Department also joined the rescue effort.
Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman described the incident as "a terrifying experience." The fire department stated that such an event could not be anticipated even in training, adding, "We are grateful that everyone returned safely to their families."
Officials reported that multiple whales were seen surfacing in the area before and after the collision. The species of the whale and whether it was injured remain unknown. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The fire department emphasized that all crew members were wearing life jackets, which prevented injuries, and urged boat, jet ski, and kayak users to wear proper life jackets.
