Italy's summer wildfires destroyed approximately 70,000 hectares of land, a report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has revealed. The figure is equivalent to an area roughly the size of 100,000 football pitches.
According to WWF data, nearly a third of the fires broke out in protected areas. The amount of land destroyed by forest fires in the country has increased by a striking 133 percent over the last 20 years.
The report revealed that the situation is even more dire in other European countries, with 219,000 hectares burned in Spain and 91,000 hectares in France.
WWF EU Forest Officer Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove said in a statement: "Europe is burning, but while firefighters desperately spray water, our leaders sit in air-conditioned rooms discussing how much they should water down the EU's climate and nature laws. The real question should be how much they need to strengthen these laws to prevent future disasters."
