South Korean golfer Yoon Ina has become one of the standout names ahead of the season's second major tournament, the U.S. Women's Open. In the 81st edition of the tournament, Yoon is considered among the championship contenders with her strong performance.
Golf Digest included Yoon Ina in its "10 players to watch" list prepared for this week's tournament. Yoon was the only South Korean golfer alongside world number 1 Nelly Korda and world number 2 Jeeno Thitikul on the list.
The tournament will begin Wednesday night local time at the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades area of California. The total prize pool for the event was announced as 12.5 million dollars.
The Riviera course challenges players
The Riviera Country Club is considered one of the toughest courses in the U.S. Its long distance, steep ups and downs, and kikuyu grass that penalizes faulty shots significantly reduce players' margin for error.
The fast and sloped greens are also expected to make scoring difficult. Therefore, accurate iron shots and the ability to get out of tough positions will be decisive in the tournament.
Golf Digest emphasized that Yoon's greatest strength is the quality of her shots. The report stated that she ranks eighth on the LPGA Tour this season with an average driving distance of 279 yards.
Although her accuracy rate at 68.8% is not among the league's best, her green hit rate is at 72.5%. This profile highlights Yoon's playing style that combines power and precision.
More consistent in her second season
Having left behind the adjustment period of her rookie season, Yoon shows a more consistent performance in her second year on the LPGA Tour. She has finished in the top 10 three times in nine tournaments this year.
Yoon achieved her best result at the Chevron Championship in April, finishing tied for fourth. This result stood out as her best finish in a major tournament.
Jamie Worsley, a golf expert at the British betting company Betfred, also included Yoon among the five leading contenders for the championship and placed her first. Worsley gave the South Korean golfer odds of 33-1.
Odds were set at 4-1 for Korda and 9-1 for Thitikul, while Yoon was considered more in the category of potential surprise contenders. Worsley said Yoon has recently improved her short game around the green and has a style suited to Riviera's tough conditions.
She once faced a major crisis
Yoon Ina faced one of the biggest crises of her career a few years ago. During the 2022 Korean Women's Open, she received a long-term suspension related to an incident involving the use of the wrong ball, raising questions about the future of her career.
However, after her comeback, Yoon quickly regained her form and began to be recognized again as one of the brightest talents in South Korean women's golf. The consistent results she has shown this season have further elevated her profile.
Yoon now heads to the U.S. Women's Open as a genuine contender for her first major tournament victory. The tough test at Riviera will show how lasting her rise is.
