New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the Knicks’ NBA Finals series has generated great excitement in the city and emphasized that his administration is focused on security and fan zones around the games. Mamdani expressed that this period has created a shared enthusiasm for the city.
Mamdani explained that the finals mean a lot to New Yorkers, with the city collectively focused on the same game. According to him, this atmosphere represents one of the rare moments when the city turns into a large communal gathering.
Security and Fan Zones
Mamdani said that ensuring watch party events are safe and well-controlled is a priority. The city administration worked with the police to keep the events both secure and enjoyable for residents.
It was noted that late approvals were required for events during the first two games of the series. During the second game, New York police detained 17 people and one officer was injured.
Mamdani expressed the desire to balance security with the celebratory spirit during moments of great excitement. He added that the same approach will apply to next year’s World Cup, emphasizing that security should not dampen the excitement.
Focus on Affordable Tickets
Mamdani praised Knicks owner James Dolan and Madison Square Garden for reserving at least 500 tickets for low-income families for the 3rd and 4th games of the finals. It was mentioned that additional tickets might be allocated for the 6th game if necessary.
The mayor highlighted the importance of affordable tickets and recalled drawing attention to this issue during the campaign period. According to him, this initiative created an important opportunity for hundreds of New Yorkers who normally would not have the chance to attend the games.
Uncertainty Over Mamdani’s Attendance at the Games
It remains unclear whether Mamdani will attend any Knicks games during the finals. It was reported that the mayor quietly attended a playoff game this spring with another city politician, sitting in the upper rows of the stands.
Meanwhile, it is expected that former U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the 3rd game, which is anticipated to increase security protocols. Mamdani’s attendance status has not been clarified.
