Protests over living costs that began in France spilled into Italy on Oct. 17, when the “Italia in Piazza” network called people onto the streets of Milan, Turin and Bologna. The demonstrations turned into clashes with police: 28 people were arrested nationwide and 104 members of the security forces were treated in Milan hospitals. Unrest flared again on Sunday in Milan’s Piazza del Duomo, where police used water cannons and tear gas; ANSA reported that 160 people were taken in that evening, most of them minors. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said protest is a right but setting cities on fire is not. Photos and videos from the streets of Milan.
