There are only two doors for U.S. visa applications in Türkiye: the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul. This page explains which application should be submitted where, the addresses and telephone numbers of the missions, the official channels to use for asking questions, and the application-location rule that foreigners living in Türkiye must follow. Information on the medical examination in Ankara for immigrant visa applicants is also provided here.
Which application is handled where?
- Temporary (nonimmigrant) visas: The Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate General in Istanbul. You may choose either one.
- Immigrant visas and fiancé(e) (K) visas: only the Embassy in Ankara.
- The U.S. Consulate in Adana and the U.S. Consular Agency in Izmir do not accept visa applications. Izmir provides only passport, birth registration, and notarial services to U.S. citizens.
- Ask your questions to the mission where you applied or will apply.
- Appointments for company employees covered by the Business Visa Program (BVP) are scheduled in Ankara. See 1.8 Emergency Appointments and Business Visa Program.

- Visa Information Service (appointments, fees, passport delivery):
- From Türkiye: +90 850 390 1950
- From the United States: +1 313 572 0883
- Complete the DS-160 form before calling.

- Account and technical problems: ustraveldocs contact form
- Immigrant visa inquiries (Ankara): Immigrant visa inquiry form
- Nonimmigrant visa inquiries – Ankara: Ankara inquiry form
- Nonimmigrant visa inquiries – Istanbul: Istanbul inquiry form
- Fulbright and U.S. government-sponsored program participants: Because they do not pay an application fee, they cannot obtain an appointment through the regular system. First complete the DS-160. Use the appointment request form for Ankara and the Istanbul inquiry form for Istanbul.
- If your case is under administrative processing, do not send an email. The Embassy will contact you by email.
Use only official channels: Appointment and fee procedures are conducted only through ustraveldocs.com/tr. All forms belonging to the U.S. government are free of charge. The Embassy does not authorize individuals or companies that provide visa consulting services. No one can guarantee a visa.
The country-of-application rule
- A nonimmigrant visa appointment must be obtained from a U.S. mission in the country of which you are a citizen or where you reside. The Department of State last updated this instruction on July 15, 2026.
- If your application is based on residence, you must be able to document that you live in that country.
- If you apply outside your country of citizenship or residence:
- it may be more difficult to demonstrate that you qualify for the visa
- you may have to wait much longer for an appointment
- the fee you paid will not be refunded or transferred elsewhere
- Exceptions to the rule include A, G, C-2, C-3, and NATO visas, as well as diplomatic and official visas. Rare exceptions may be made in humanitarian or medical emergencies.
- Immigrant visas: Since November 1, 2025, the National Visa Center (NVC) has been scheduling interviews in the consular district where you reside, or, if you prefer, in your country of citizenship.
- After your appointment has been scheduled, if you want to transfer it to another country, contact the NVC—not the consulate—using the Public Inquiry Form.
- Existing immigrant visa appointments are generally not canceled.
Foreign nationals living in Türkiye
- Non-Turkish citizens may also apply for a visa in Türkiye. The Embassy warns that it may be more difficult to demonstrate eligibility because of language differences and because the officer may not be closely familiar with the conditions of other countries.
- Foreign applicants should bring the following to the interview:
- birth certificate or identity card
- marriage certificate, if applicable
- military service or exemption certificate for men over 18
- Iranian citizens: the original military service card and its English translation, the original birth certificate (shenasnameh), the original national identity card, and all old passports.
- Citizens of countries covered by Decision No. 10998 may apply and attend an interview, but a visa may not be issued. See 1.11 Travel Restrictions.
- Citizens of certain countries are required to provide a visa bond for a B-1/B-2 visa, and this requirement is independent of the place of application. Türkiye is not on this list. For details, see 1.4 Fees.
Interview language and who may accompany you
- Nonimmigrant visa interviews in Ankara are conducted in Turkish, Persian, Arabic, and English. Interpreters for other languages are not accepted.
- As a rule, only applicants with appointments are admitted. Exceptions:
- a parent or legal guardian of an applicant under 18
- a person assisting an elderly or disabled applicant
- a person specifically summoned by a consular officer (must show a 221(g) letter or an email from the Visa Unit)
- U.S. citizens may not enter the Consular Section with applicants without prior permission from the Visa Unit.
- For building entry rules and prohibited items, see 1.6 Interview.
