US Coast Guard teams launched a large-scale search and rescue operation in San Francisco Bay. One person died and three are missing after a pontoon boat capsized near Alcatraz Island.
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispin said at a press conference that there were 20 people on board. Sixteen people were rescued; 13 survivors reached shore on their own and three were taken to hospital.
Crispin said the boat capsized about 550 meters off Alcatraz Island and was a three-story pontoon boat. The fire chief stated that a boat fire was initially reported around 3:35 p.m., but when crews arrived they found a capsized vessel, and no evidence of a fire was later found.
The San Francisco Police Department's marine unit reported that the boat was found capsized and largely submerged, with a fuel leak and the engine still running. One person was found in the water, while others were trapped in the upper compartment of the vessel.
One person pulled from the water received CPR but later died.
Eleven boats, divers and helicopters are involved in the search and rescue operation, which includes US Coast Guard teams. Officials announced that the search will continue overnight and into Wednesday morning. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
