The plan by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to open a temporary homeless shelter in the East Village area is being challenged by a lawsuit filed by local residents. The court application reveals that even some supporters who voted for Mamdani have doubts about the project's cost and feasibility.
The lawsuit claims that the city quickly implemented the decision to open a new homeless men's shelter at 8 East 3rd Street by bypassing the necessary environmental and legal procedures. The city administration based this decision on the emergency declaration from 2022. This declaration was primarily issued in response to the influx of asylum seekers.
Mamdani's office announced that the new shelter was planned due to the closure of the Bellevue Shelter and that about 250 people would be relocated elsewhere. Additionally, a second shelter for families with children is scheduled to open on May 1 at 333 Bowery Street.
The lawsuit was submitted to the New York Supreme Court, but the court has not yet responded to the request for an emergency injunction. On social media, the lawsuit has sparked debates even among Mamdani's supporters and was found ironic by some politicians.
