Glacier National Park, one of the most visited natural wonders in the United States, stands out with trails that offer unforgettable experiences in a short time. Travel & Leisure writer Kyu Flashman describes the path to Redrock Falls in the eastern part of the park as "the route that offers the best views with the least effort."
The approximately 6.5-kilometer round-trip trail starts at the Swiftcurrent Trailhead near Swiftcurrent Motor Inn & Cabins. Right from the start, the route offers an impressive view of the jagged peaks of the Lewis Range, and continues under dense forest cover along the shores of Fishercap and Redrock lakes.
Flashman says, "With a bit of agility over the rocks along the shore of Redrock Lake, you can reach the base of the falls directly. The water cascading from about 6 meters high, combined with the bright red rock terraces and the surrounding mountain scenery, creates a mesmerizing sight."
Practical Information for the Hike
No special equipment is needed for the short and largely flat trail. Comfortable hiking shoes or sandals, sunscreen, binoculars, and a good camera are sufficient. However, because grizzly bears and black bears live in the park, it is strongly recommended to carry bear spray.
As Glacier is one of the most popular national parks in the United States, the trail can get quite crowded, especially on clear days. Flashman recommends early fall or late spring to avoid the crowds.
Best Time to Visit
Although much of the park is fully open only from June to September, May and September are ideal for both fewer visitors and wildlife viewing. Flashman adds, "I was here in May and saw many more mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and deer compared to the high season."
The park's famous Going-to-the-Sun Road is generally open to vehicle traffic from late June to early October and requires advance reservations. Those who want to include this road in their itinerary are advised to choose the summer months.
A picnic by the falls with snacks from Nell's restaurant in Swiftcurrent after the hike is a detail that doubles the enjoyment of the route.
