Criminal hackers are increasingly using AI-powered tools to speed up their attacks, as a critical security flaw in PHP, the programming language behind as many as 70% of the world's websites, has opened the door to a wave of intrusions that some commentators have dubbed "Black October," The Wall Street Journal reported.
PHP's developers disclosed the critical issue on Wednesday, warning that it could be exploited to take control of any system running the software. Organizations around the world have been rushing to install updates.

Microsoft said threat actors in several regions are using Artex, a Chinese open-source AI hacking tool, to accelerate their attacks.
In one example cited by the Journal, startup founder Colin Parsons woke up to about 50 billing emails after hackers used his accounts to run services from Anthropic and OpenAI, generating $449 in charges.
