Alex Murdaugh, awaiting retrial for the murder of his wife and son, has been ranked among South Carolina's largest individual tax debtors. The July 16 quarterly report from the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) listed a debt under 'Murdaugh, Richard' at $1,630,201.02, ranking him fourth among the top debtors.
The department said it releases names and debt amounts of taxpayers for 'transparency, fairness, and compliance.' Officials explained that before someone appears on the public list, repeated efforts are made to collect the debt via letters, phone, and in-person contact, and a state tax lien is placed against each name.
Alex Murdaugh is accused of shooting his wife Maggie and son Paul on June 7, 2021. He was convicted in March 2023 but the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the conviction after allegations that court clerk Rebecca Hill made inappropriate comments to jurors, influencing the verdict. The case will be retried.
Murdaugh's attorney Dick Harpootlian said they accepted a flat fee five years ago and will remain until the case concludes. Harpootlian said, 'Sometimes you take cases that are economic losers, but that's the nature of the job.'
The defense team plans to request testing of unidentified male DNA reportedly found under Maggie's fingernails before the retrial.
