Israeli security forces have detained a U.S. citizen on suspicion of spying for Iran.
According to a statement from Israeli police, the 20-year-old American, a resident of the country, was taken into custody earlier this month. The suspect is alleged to have photographed and documented sensitive areas in connection with Iranian intelligence.
As part of the investigation, it was determined that the young man received payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars for each task. The detention was carried out in a joint operation by Israeli police and the internal security service Shin Bet.
Israeli police investigation official Amihay Benta said that many individuals spying for the enemy have been uncovered in recent months, with some carrying out these acts during the war and aiding the enemy's plans. Benta said, "We will continue to monitor and uncover such crimes in cooperation with Shin Bet and bring to justice anyone who jeopardizes state security."
According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, dozens of Israeli citizens, including soldiers, have been arrested over the past two years on suspicion of spying for Iran for payment.
Meanwhile, the war that began between Israel and the U.S. and Iran on February 28 ended on June 18 with a memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran, following a temporary ceasefire declared on April 8. During the war, Iran launched missiles and drones targeting vast areas inside Israel, and Israeli authorities imposed strict censorship on the extent of losses. The agreement stipulates a cessation of hostilities, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iran, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
