Anthony Head, the British actor known for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Little Britain, and Ted Lasso, has died at the age of 72.
His death was announced on June 5, 2026, by his daughters Emily Head and Daisy Head. The two actresses revealed that their father passed away peacefully surrounded by family due to complications related to pneumonia.
Gained widespread recognition as Rupert Giles
Head became widely known for his role as Rupert Giles in the globally popular 1990s series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Giles, the mentor and father figure to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy, brought Head international fame.
In the UK, he was remembered for his role as Michael Stevens in the series Little Britain. This character was reportedly inspired by then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. Scenes featuring Head alongside David Walliams’ character Sebastian Love received significant attention.
Roles in Ted Lasso and other productions
More recently, Head portrayed Rupert Mannion in the series Ted Lasso. Mannion, the ex-husband of Rebecca Welton played by Hannah Waddingham, was featured as the former owner of AFC Richmond and later the owner of West Ham United.
His screen career extended beyond these roles. He played King Uther Pendragon in the series Merlin and appeared in many notable TV productions including Doctor Who, Bridgerton, Motherland, My Family, New Tricks, Jonathan Creek, and Spooks.
Impact in cinema and advertising
Head also took part in various film projects. He appeared alongside his daughter Emily Head in The Inbetweeners Movie and featured in Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters.
His recognition among broad audiences was also boosted by the Nescafe Gold Blend advertising campaign in the 1980s. The series of commercials, running from 1987 to 1993 and featuring Sharon Maughan, attracted great interest.
Farewell messages from loved ones and colleagues
Matt Lucas, creator of Little Britain, shared heartfelt and warm words about Head on social media. Lucas said they were looking for a "Tony Head type" while preparing the show but were very lucky when Head himself applied.
Author Harlan Coben also published a tribute message for Head, describing him as elegant, witty, outspoken, friendly, and highly talented, bringing joy and warmth to every room he entered.
Head’s long-term partner Sarah Fisher passed away last December at the age of 61. Thus, his death marks another profound loss for his family and close circle.
