Calgary Opera has removed bass-baritone Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from the remaining performances of Puccini's Tosca after he unfurled a Palestinian flag during the opening-night curtain call on Oct. 16. Another singer will take over his role of Angelotti for the rest of the run.
In a statement, the company called the act "unexpected and unauthorized" and said individual political protest contravenes its policy and its responsibility to create "a more connected, caring and civil society." It said all forms of personal protest on its stage are prohibited regardless of the political symbol, and declined to comment on personnel matters.
Singer says he has no regrets
Sanchez-Ortega said he had no regrets about the gesture. He also alleged that financial threats had been made against the company, a claim that has not been independently verified.
The incident echoes a July 2025 episode at London's Royal Opera House, where a performer unfurled a Palestinian flag during the curtain call of the final performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore.
