Australia's spy chief warned that the country faces multifaceted threats that pose a systemic challenge to national security and disrupt the security environment.
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) Director Mike Burgess said in his annual threat assessment speech that although the terror threat level remains "probable", this designation does not fully reflect "simultaneous, cascading and combined threats".
Burgess said, "'Probable' doesn't tell the whole story. The next level on the scale is 'expected', which applies when we have intelligence about a specific attack. We don't have such intelligence at the moment." However, he emphasized that the environment has deteriorated and they know that politically motivated violent acts have become more likely than the term 'probable' implies.
Bondi Attack and ASIO's Record
In December, after a mass shooting near Bondi Beach in Sydney targeting a Hanukkah celebration that killed 15 people, ASIO resolved more than a dozen major terrorism-related files. Police said the two attackers appeared to have been inspired by the ISIS militant group.
Burgess said ASIO has foiled 31 major terror plots since 2014 and that the current threat environment is more complex.
