In the state of Georgia, the dismembered remains of 37-year-old bartender Jamal Rashad Parker were found in the Dog River Reservoir Lake, about 48 kilometers outside Atlanta. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office charged 46-year-old Mario Andre Barber and 42-year-old Brittany Amber Baker with murder in connection with the case.
It is believed the suspects killed Parker inside a house in Douglasville where Baker lived. In late last month, detectives were seen leaving the scene with a reciprocating saw and cleaning supplies.
The victim's identity was confirmed using DNA comparison technology after his father contacted authorities, reporting that his son's tattoos matched those of the victim.
Police did not disclose whether Parker knew his alleged killers. However, a fundraising campaign started by a family member described the suspects as "people he knew and trusted."
The suspects pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday and are being held without bail. Both are reported to have lengthy criminal records.
"I want them to get punished. And I don't think life in prison is even enough," said Parker's father, Charles Parker, outside the courthouse. "It's the kind of thing you see on TV, but I mean... They had no remorse," he added.
The victim was described as a musician and artist with "a beautiful soul and spirit," in addition to working as a bartender at Ms. Icey’s Kitchen & Bar in Atlanta. A fundraising campaign started by his family to cover funeral expenses stated, "He loved life and the people he met on his life journey. He was a musician, visual artist, and a professional bartender who enjoyed creating new drinks. This has completely devastated and heartbroken our family and friends."
