A fire broke out aboard the Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel BLUE CARRIER 2 while it was sailing in waters north of Mykonos on Friday morning, September 25, 2026.
According to Attica Ferries, the fire was reported at approximately 8:57 a.m. while the vessel was operating its scheduled route. Emergency procedures were immediately activated and the relevant Greek authorities were notified.
Initial reports indicate that the blaze started in one of the vessel’s garage areas. Authorities are examining the possibility that the fire originated from a truck, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
BLUE CARRIER 2 was carrying a total of 195 vehicles, including 166 trucks and 29 passenger cars.
There were 29 people aboard at the time of the incident: 28 crew members and one passenger, who was a truck driver.
All 29 people were evacuated from the vessel in an organized operation. They boarded the ship’s lifeboats before being picked up by nearby vessels and transported safely toward the island of Tinos.

Authorities and the vessel’s operator said all 29 people were in good health, with no injuries reported.
A major emergency response was launched north of Mykonos, involving Hellenic Coast Guard vessels, firefighting boats, tugboats, private vessels and other ships in the area. Two firefighting helicopters were also mobilized.
BLUE CARRIER 2 is a Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel built in 1997. It is approximately 162.5 meters long and has a gross tonnage of 23,986.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire as firefighting and maritime response operations continue around the vessel.
