Laws aimed at improving children’s safety when using the internet and artificial intelligence were signed into law in California. The measures signed by Governor Newsom received bipartisan support in the state legislature.
The new rules prohibit social media platforms from offering additional features to children under 16. The legislation aims to strengthen protections for children both online and in their use of artificial intelligence.

Newsom puts children at the center of technology debates
Newsom said children’s safety must remain at the center of every debate about technology. He said the rapid pace of technological innovation requires protective measures to adapt to these changes.
Newsom said California would not stand by when unregulated technology puts children at risk, adding that innovation brings responsibility and that protecting children must be a priority.
The legislation makes California the first state in the United States to enact such comprehensive regulations concerning children’s internet use.
