Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for the swift renewal of the North American trade agreement.
According to a statement from Carney's office, the leaders said during a phone call on Thursday that the agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico should be renewed as soon as possible. They said renewing the agreement would provide greater predictability for businesses and workers across North America.
Trump takes a different view of the three-way agreement
In an earlier assessment, U.S. President Donald Trump argued that the United States would be better off without the three-way trade agreement covering Canada and Mexico.

Canada-Mexico trade and cooperation
Carney and Sheinbaum also discussed progress in cross-border trade between Canada and Mexico. The two leaders stressed the need to maintain strong bilateral cooperation for regional security and economic prosperity.
Mexico supports Canada in fighting wildfires
Carney thanked Sheinbaum for Mexico's support in fighting the wildfires that broke out in Canada this summer. As part of that support, Mexico sent more than 400 firefighters and support personnel to Canada.
The two leaders agreed to maintain close contact as talks on North American trade continue.
