Rioters set cars and trash containers ablaze in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao on Monday night after a protest against far-right commentator Vito Quiles, whose planned event near the University of Deusto had already been called off.
Quiles canceled the event in the afternoon after consulting the Basque regional police, the Ertzaintza, over the risk of disturbances. The university suspended classes and closed its facilities for the afternoon.
From protest to riot
The gathering, called by student and anti-fascist groups, was largely peaceful until it began to disperse. Around 7 p.m., protesters started burning containers near the campus, and the unrest spread to nearby avenues. At least six vehicles were set on fire, a municipal police motorcycle was used as a barricade, and shops and street furniture were damaged. Looting at several stores is under investigation.

Seven minors among those held
The Ertzaintza arrested 19 people, seven of them minors; the oldest was 22. Three others are under investigation for public disorder.
The Basque government's security department condemned the riots, saying those involved had acted in a premeditated way and that a group had thrown stones at the Ertzaintza station in Deusto. Critics questioned how long it took police to arrive after the fires began.
The violence came two days after riots in Barcelona that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called "pure vandalism," ahead of Spain's Nov. 29 general election.
